First, defining a term: "The Soul" and "Consciousness" are the SAME THING, the former in traditional Christian terminology, the latter in Metaphysics, which insists on a more scientific approach to understanding REALITY.
To MY knowledge, the Bible is SILENT on this issue, and clergy have made GOOD FAITH efforts to decide WHEN the fetus becomes a bona fide individual, PROPERLY PROTECTED BY CIVIL LAWS.
But I would ask Catholic Clergy to look a little deeper at the issue, in the spirit of the FACT that the Catholic Church HAS ALWAYS SUPPORTED THE SCIENTIFIC IDEA OF "EVOLUTION" (unlike many Catholic Politicians, Rick Santorem and Newt Gingrich among them, see: http://scottkenan.blogspot.mx/2012/08/latest-facebook-insult-cia-is-now.html and also see this on how I DOCUMENTED Newt Gingrich's illegal drug operation in 1990, AND LANDED IN JAIL FOR 15 WEEKS ON FALSE CHARGES THEN!!!: http://scottkenan.blogspot.mx/2011/05/newt-gingrich-stone-mountain-drug.html ).
EVERYTHING is governed by and HAS consciousness -- even rocks, that have enough consciousness to maintain their identity as rocks. YES, they can be cleaved, and YES, we have enough scientific information to understand the ionic bonds that bind many rocks -- PRETTY COOL TO SCIENTIFICALLY UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF CONSCIOUSNESS (God being ULTIMATE, SELF-EXISTENT CONSCIOUSNESS).
Now let's look at the the role of INDIVIDUAL CONSCIOUSNESS in ALL we call "living matter". The Consciousness/Soul of every living individual is that metaphysical THING that organizes it AS an individual and overseas its survival before all else. When this THING is NOT present the individual DIES of disorganization.
The human (and other animal) zygote (union of sperm and egg as ONE), quickly begins to multiply and eventually becomes a viable human. It is at the point that the fetus is VIABLE outside the mother WITHOUT SUPER-HUMAN assistance, that the soul has entered the fetus and transformed it into an individual with full 'rights".
It's really that simple.
That said, I FULLY SUPPORT all those who would discourage abortions of EARLIER fetuses for these reasons and with these stipulations:
1. ALL human life is cheapened when abortion is thought of as "the lazy couple's birth control".
2. All POTENTIAL individual lives should be supported WHENEVER POSSIBLE AND PRACTICAL -- INCLUDING MENTAL HEALTH of the mother, especially who IS a Human, while the fetus before viability is POTENTIAL HUMAN, so does NOT hold the "Trump Card".
3. Those who work hard to PREVENT "unwanted pregnancies" by discouraging rape or championing preventive birth control (devices, rhythms, medications, even abstinence -- which is USUALLY NOT actually practical) are to be COMMENDED. They truly care about REAL PEOPLE (although they are sometimes misguided).
4. Those who work with pregnant women to give them the material and emotional help to bring their pregnancies to term and then find a LOVING way for the baby to be brought up are some of GOD'S FAVORITE PEOPLE!!!
5. Those who punish "Jezebels" by law or "back-biting" are GOD'S ENEMIES -- and that INCLUDES those who insist fetuses caused by RAPE or other unfortunate methods HAVE LEGAL PRIORITY OVER THE CHOICE OF THE WOMAN WHO IS PREGNANT (or publish graphic photos or descriptions of abortion to scare women who are EMOTIONALLY TERRORIZED already by rape of other unfortunate pregnancy)!!!
6. The earlier the better, as far as abortion is concerned. I NEVER like it, but recognize that it sometimes is the ONLY realistic option. since the "soul" has NOT YET taken over its organization, these EARLY abortions CANNOT BE CALLED MURDER!!!
