I SUPPORT its removal, but it MUST be done LEGALLY by Act of City Council -- and vandals should ALWAYS be apprehended.

Neil Alexander, then Arch-Bishop of Atlanta and titular Head of Sewanee, was using the proceeds of Tennessee Williams's estate, renamed the Walter Dakin Fund, to COVER for the fact that so many alumni STOPPED DONATING because they were ENRAGED that the Episcopal Church had to STOP promoting the RESURRECTION OF THE CONFEDERACY!!!
And then just when Bishop Michael Curry, Bishop of North Carolina, was elected HEAD PRELATE of the Episcopal Church, USA, the Anglican Communion in England voted to BAR the Episcopal Church USA from voting with them for THREE YEARS -- because of the American Church's CRIMES -- and that is STILL IN FORCE!!!

Confederate Statue removal was DISCUSSED by City Officials who claim a North Carolina Law FORBIDS any city to remove Confederate statues and memorials -- yet Gov. Cooper has now CALLED for them all to be removed. Perhaps it will take a PRONOUNCEMENT from the Governor -- or Act of the NC Legislature.

I AGREE that the law-breakers who did this should be apprehended and punished. Their REMOVAL needs to be done by act of City Council. Perhaps the Kenan Family will fund a nice park for these statues -- elsewhere.

For every confederate statue that remains, there should be erected, right next to it, on PUBLIC land, and with PUBLIC dollars, a statue that memorializes the adolescent slave girls that were raped and impregnated by their owners, and one of a slave child being whipped and abused, and a statue of children being traded and SOLD away from their parents, and replicas of the barbaric slave ships, etc.
THAT would be far more representative of what the confederacy fought for.
If the people want to glorify and lay claim to this horrible "heritage", they must expose all of it. Anything else is dishonest.

Can the stoplight cameras � pick up any info as to the perpetrators? I think I would install some cameras nearby and keep them rolling for 24:7. Then I would add motion detector lighting all around the statues! Stupid people do stupid $hi@!
I knew it was coming! Wilmington's tourism is based on It's beaches and its Historical greatness! This must STOP....
It may take a police presence to protect the history, or armed patriots!

Those that want to pretend history can be erased by taking down monuments, think about this and educate yourselves before you call yourselves Patriots.
Confederate soldiers ,sailors, and Marines that fought in the Civil war were made U.S. Veterans by an act of Congress in in 1957, U.S. Public Law 85-425, Sec 410, Approved 23 May, 1958. This made all Confederate Army/ Navy/ Marine Veterans equal to U.S. Veterans. Additionally, under U.S. Public Law 810, Approved by the 17th Congress on 26 Feb 1929 the War Department was directed to erect headstones and recognize Confederate grave sites as U.S. War dead grave sites. Just for the record the last Confederate veteran died in 1958. So, in essence, when you remove a Confederate statue, monument or headstone, you are in fact, removing a statue, monument or head stone of a U.S. VETERAN.
