Capt. William Rand Kenan, Sr.'s "Rapid-Fire Brigade".
Kenan Memorial Fountain was a gift to the City of Wilmington by William Rand Kenan, Jr., to memorialize his White Supremacist parents, and sits in Kenan Plaza with Carolina Apartments to one's back while taking this view. He also built the apartments as a Luxury Hotel that opened in 1905 and has hosted Heads of State. It was the most technologically advanced building in North Carolina when it opened -- but you would never know that now!!!
As you can see, Kenan Fountain originally had a lower tier that was removed years ago, and the road raised higher so vehicles could drive by closer.

What is your name, place of birth, and where were you raised?
Scott David Kenan, Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1951. Lived there until 1957, Louisville, KY until 1963, West Chester, PA until 1968. I began Denison University in Granville, OH in 1969 living on campus as Dad's Sun Oil Company career took off and he was transferred to Elnora, New York near Schenectady, Peabody, MA, and then East Greenwich, RI before I graduated in 1973 -- living and working summer jobs in those places.
I first came to Wilmington when six weeks old, and my father's best friend growing up here, Odell Balkcum, fed me a teaspoon of bourbon to keep me from turning Yankee -- but he must have just dipped his finger in it and put it to my tongue. We vacationed here usually for two weeks nearly every year, until my parents retired here in 1980 and lived here until 1999, most of that time I lived in Atlanta and came frequently in summer for the beach and party-bars at night. I was unaware of all Politics here then.

Whetstone HS in Columbus, OH 1969 (but it was ultra-conservative, I hated it, and only one year there), Denison University, 1973
How long have you lived in Wilmington, North Carolina?
I moved here homeless on December 30, 2010, after my parents had paid for homeless me in Puerto Vallarta to drive back to their then Raleigh home, and they didn't like my claims and had cops evict me without warning, claiming they had an ex-parte Restraining Order -- but it was never served and there is no record they had one -- they just got cops to do it. I lived on the streets there in my car for two weeks, then decided to move to Wilmington that I've always loved and it's two climate zones warmer.
In spring 2012, after Public Defender Jen Harjo made a deal with D.A. Ben David that he would erase several false convictions he had gotten against me if I left the state for at least a year, I drove back to Puerto Vallarta until June 2015, and after thugs tried to kill me twice in a week and then broke into my car and placed a fake bomb in it. When I had Police come, they were part of it. I quickly fled back to the states with help of a benefactor in NYC who loved my book on Tennessee Williams and my blog and between late 2011 and summer 2016, he gave me a total of over $65,000.00 that also covered major dental work, and a three day hospitalization in P.V. with heart and lung problems. I've lived here since then.

What do you know about the 1898 Wilmington Massacre/Coup?
The basics of what happened learned from books, browsing the reference room in downtown library, also at Liberty Hall in Kenansville, talking to locals, movies including Wilmington on Fire and The Red Cape. I delved deeper into the wealthy Kenans' role as I found it too shocking to be believed and disgusting that William Rand Kenan, Sr., had manned the Colt brand "Gatling Gun" that even in Wilmington's Lie the photo of "Capt. Kenan's Rapid-Fire Brigade" is not properly credited as it is on the wall of the Cape Fear Museum.
Did your relatives talk about it?
No, next to never, and while my father in his last years admitted to me many of his and Mom's crimes, he went mentally diminished his last years, and I never thought to ask about HIS Dad's participation to get more details. I have come to know other close relatives living here and some of the wealthy Kenans, but none of them ever discussed it.
One of my best Facebook friends is Linda Wilkins-Daniels, who left after four years as President of the African-American Caucus of NC Democrats, and she and I have traded much info. Judge Robin Wickes Robinson, whose Court I'd never been in, greeted me in her robe in a Courthouse hallway, and THANKED ME for returning to expose Kenan Crimes. Judges Richard Russell Davis and Chief District Court Judge Jay Corpening -- as well as NC Atty. Gen. Josh Stein -- are also my allies.
When did you first hear about it?
Soon after I moved here about the first of 2011.
What do you know about the Kenans' participation in the affair?
My Grandfather, Joseph Emerson Kenan, Sr., was a Klan member and participated in late high school, but I doubt he was a main person. I come from poor Kenans descended from another of the three Kenan brothers who separately came to Cape Fear in the 1730s. When Mary Lily had just inherited Henry Flagler's entire estate, the New York Times declared Mary Lily (Kenan) Flagler the wealthiest woman on earth, and her siblings got much too. They drove around Wilmington in chauffeured limos, and people mocked Dad for being a Kenan and so poor he often had no shoes, so Dad hated them, but later worked like them to put Trump into power.
The wealthy Kenans used the 1898 event as a model in putting Trump into power and destroying Democracy with impunity -- why I'm so nuts to expose Kenan Crimes. It also inspired most of the Jim Crow Laws being passed across the South.
William Rand Kenan, Sr., had been the top-rated marksman of the Confederacy, and part of the Duplin (county) Rifles, made up half by Kenans. He was the ONLY Confederate credited with taking a shot at Lincoln within Washington, DC, but missed and killed his Aide. Before 1898, he had been appointed Head of Customs House here (where the Fed. Court House is now), by a Democratic President -- that position was then more powerful than the Governor's, and great for getting bribes. When a Republican Prez appointed a black man to take over, he began scheming, and as an Elder of First Presbyterian, was a top leader of the Massacre.
What would you like to see done to heal the results of the event?
I stated my purpose in moving back to Wilmington in 2015 was to expose my family's crimes, and to get the wealthy Kenans to donate the money to build a proper museum to 1898 -- and place the Confederate monuments there too, but Tom Kenan refuses to answer my many letters, emails, and phone calls and I've gotten nowhere with that. There is much more that could be done -- especially getting the truth out, which is only much known in this area of NC, but nearly nowhere else -- but with everything I'm involved in, that was my emphasis, before exposing Kenan/Trump crimes.
Would you be an advocate for financial compensation for the descendants of victims?
In general, yes, but without hearing specifics of how that would happen, I can't say I'd agree with someone else's idea of how to do that. Also, I feel too emotionally tied to those events and OTHERS should make that proposal.
