That seems a little simplistic Dr. Cannon. There was concern that the book was chosen for its content not its craft, which is a valid concern for an AP English class.

Removing from curriculum but not the library sounds like a fair compromise.

The BOE can not ban books in New Hanover county libraries. Why? No jurisdiction. So where I come from, this was no compromise. Of course you and I are both entitled to our differing opinions..
AP English isn’t grammar and reading. Some books are selected to encourage critical thinking, discussion, and interpretation, some motivate change, and encourage students to think outside their own, sometimes limited learning experiences, and stuff like that, iMO if you don’t want your child to read books that may challenge thoughts and beliefs, don’t pay for them to take AP English. Take AP Chemistry or Statistics. Not much controversy there.

- Many students wanting to read this now controversial book, are greatly limited by when/if the book will be returned to their library after check out. Personally I see this, at best, as a pathetic compromise, if you consider a compromise at all. Luckily I could purchase the book. Now I see this book as a challenge to the far right agenda, hampering some white Christian beliefs.
