On this date in 1989, "Driving Miss Daisy" was released.
Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Lucille Ball, Lauren Bacall, and Angela Lansbury all were interested in playing Miss Daisy. Morgan Freeman originated the role of Hoke in the off-Broadway production of the play. Studio executives also considered Bette Midler and Eddie Murphy pairing.
Alfred Uhry based the story of Daisy and Hoke on his own grandmother Lena Fox and her chauffeur Will Coleman. While being interviewed in the 2008 PBS mini-series "The Jewish Americans", Uhry, who grew up as a Jewish child in Atlanta during the 40s and 50s, admitted that many Jews in Atlanta celebrated Christmas, like Boolie and his wife, in an attempt to be a part of a community, where Jews were a minority.

Readers know that my close Denison University friend Edith Holmes Love (1972) -- the ONLY woman who ever proposed marriage to me, although she knew I was GAY -- was Managing Director of the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, where I lived 1983 - 2010.
Edith NURSED this play out of Alfred Uhry -- onto the stage -- and then helped it become a MOVIE, too!!! And then after Edith took the Alliance Theatre's Production of it on tour to RUSSIA and St. Petersburg, she was showing me the photos and of the impressive NEVA RIVER that runs through St. Petersburg.
Rick Neva was my FIRST roommate when I bought and moved into my Stone Mountain house in 1988. I did NOT KNOW that my NAZI PARENTS with the CIA had place him there -- until Rick decided to MOVE OUT WITHOUT NOTICE and my parents showed up UN-ANNOUNCED from North Carolina to HELP HIM!!!
