After the 2004 tsunami
The way in which people came together to support recovery efforts after Thailand was rocked by the tsunami of 2004 truly embodies the motto Amazing Thailand. Visiting many of today’s booming tourist areas makes it hard to imagine the damage these communities experienced. However, when Kenan Institute Asia entered Phang-nga province shortly after the tsunami, it encountered an area where thousands had lost their lives, children had been orphaned, and homes had been razed.
To help rebuild communities across Phang-nga province, Kenan launched the Tsunami Recovery Action Initiative (TRAI) in 2005. TRAI created a model for community-based tourism to improve the livelihoods of people in the tsunami-affected areas of Phang-nga province. The model focused on generating income, preserving the local culture, and protecting the environment. Kenan trained more than 3,000 community members, entrepreneurs, hotel owners, and students on the principles of sustainable tourism as well as marketing and finance so that they could successfully open or grow their businesses.
Importantly, TRAI built a common understanding, vision, and strategy among key stakeholders to utilize sustainable tourism as a vehicle to drive development and rebirth in Phang-nga.
While TRAI concluded in 2010, the initiative has had a lasting impact on Phang-nga province and its citizens. TRAI helped Phang-nga not only recover from the tsunami, but also experience improved standards of living.
