EXCERPT:
Additionally, Higdon announced a local partnership with New Hanover County on a county-funded federal prosecutor, Murphy Averitt, to handle federal prosecution specific to New Hanover County.
Though Higdon and other officials, including New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David, said county commissioners voted Monday to pay for the position, no vote actually happened. While commissioners have said they intend to support the initiative, the position is proposed to be funded at $100,000 as part of the 2018-19 county budget, which commissioners are scheduled to approve in June and would take effect July 1.
“It hasn’t technically happened yet,” David said. He added that Averitt will start as a county-level employee under his office on June 11, then switch to the federal role on Sept. 1.
