Five centuries after Henry VIII broke with Rome, a Pope has accepted a rare honour at Windsor.
With King Charles’s approval, Pope Leo XIV has become Papal Confrater of the College of St George at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, a symbol of Christian brotherhood and friendship.
The announcement comes exactly one year after the King and Queen’s historic visit to the Holy See, when Charles was welcomed as Royal Confrater of St Paul’s Outside the Walls in Rome.
English monarchs had historic ties to the basilica before the Reformation severed that connection. These reciprocal religious honours are the first of their kind in half a millennium.
Of course, Henry VIII might have a few thoughts about this.
His determination to end his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, despite the Pope’s refusal to annul it, helped drive England’s break with Rome in the 1530s. Parliament subsequently recognized him as Supreme Head of the Church of England.
If Henry could offer an imaginary response to today’s news, it might be: “I went to all that trouble, and you’ve saved the Pope a seat?”
Because there really will be a seat.
A specially commissioned chair for Charles already stands beside the monastic stalls in Rome. A corresponding chair for the Pope will be unveiled at Windsor.
Later this autumn, Charles will attend a service to dedicate a mosaic icon of Christ, personally gifted by Pope Leo, at St George’s Chapel.
Five centuries later, the royal story has taken a turn Henry could scarcely have imagined.
Could this become one of King Charles’s most meaningful royal legacies???
Yes, you can watch this re-broadcast on CNN tonight (Sat. 10/24/2026), at 8:00 PM EDT!!!
