1. The same two city workers who used to ride in a golf-cart occasionally driving close enough to a large piece of trash to pick it up with a "pick-up stick" (but the last week -- since I complained about that in this blog) have been actually walking around sweeping up cigarette butts when they take a break from taking a reading break in the Pavilion on the river, or drinking coffee, checking smart phones, shooting the breeze, and/or eating ice cream from quart containers in the Italian Coffee Shop on Front Street (they've took two EXTENDED breaks this morning before 9:45 AM right in front of me -- even though they MUST know I blog about them.
PEOPLE WHO WORK PRIMARILY TO PROTECT WILMINGTON'S COCAINE AND HEROIN TRAFFIC ARE ENTIRELY SHAMELESS AND FEEL ENTITLED TO SUCK THE PUBLIC TEAT DRY WHILE PROVIDING BEN DAVID AND OTHERS WITH THE INFO THEY NEED TO KEEP THE DRUGS AND PROFITS ROLLING!!!
2. That said, the shaved-head one, Vince, with the mustache-goatee (much like that sported by James Sharpe of Mercy Houses Shelter), told incredible tales that I believe are entirely true concerning WASTE in administration of Disabilities Programs -- including his experience trying to STOP benefits after he got a job -- which took MONTHS to accomplish.
3. Did you know that you can make a fair amount of money while ON disability, but not while applying for it. It usually takes at least three years to get benefits (I'm told by many). People NOT looking for work (including these people who would be disallowed if they found even a small job) are NOT included in unemployment figures, due to the legal definition excluding people not actively seeking work.
REAL UNEMPLOYMENT IS MUCH HIGHER THAN REPORTED NUMBERS. Many more people have given up looking than just those hoping to get disability benefits.
4. James Sharpe mysteriously got another, new "electronic cigarette" after his first one broke (by his own words to me) "after only about eight puffs." He's been showing and promoting it at Mercy House Shelter as if he expects to be able to sell it to homeless or "homeless" people at approximately $100.00.
Last night, he also had displayed on his bunk -- as if for sale -- at least four pendants that appeared to be fairly pricey. I have overheard him talking on his phone (on the street) about lining up large painting-contractor jobs in Durham, NC and other "nearby" towns. He's seen me each time -- I do NOT sneak up on him, etc. -- yet he continues to do these things when I am witness.
SO IF HE'S SUCH A BIG WHEELER AND DEALER: WHY IS HE NEEDING TO STAY IN A HOMELESS SHELTER??? There are people with REAL needs that must be turned away EVERY DAY because of a lack of beds.
5. Yesterday, I ran into a man who works for FEMA down near the river. He told me he has been here since Hurricane Irene, with little to do, lately. Today, they are moving him up to Connecticut where more than a million still are/were without power. He said FEMA really does a lot more than most people know, but claims to be broke. His apropos question: "WHY AM I PAID $44.00 PER HOUR AS A BOTTOM-LEVEL WORKER. IT'S TOO MUCH. THE VICTIMS OF DISASTERS SHOULD GET MORE OF THE MONEY."
6. "Rosencrantz" Trehan was running around town this morning trying to figure out how to charge his "new" cell phone. I told him to try the library electrical outlets (DUH!!!), since he's not allowed near those on the river side of Water Street or he'll be arrested for trespassing. His friends claim the phone is "hot as hell", but I suppose no one told our hapless hops-philic that many times stolen phones remain active so that criminals stupid enough to use them make calls that are recorded and traced.
Not claiming the phone is actually hot -- or that "Tre" is a criminal . . .
>>> I had fun yesterday, taking a day off politics and weeding at First Presbyterian's Biblical Herb Garden, once the sight of the home where President Woodrow Wilson spent formative years. Wilson (like Dwight Eisenhower), was a President whose gotten less than his due appreciation. Interestingly, he's our only President who had a PhD degree. How's THAT for good ol' Presbyterian emphasis on EDUCATION???
