Michelangelo dared to sculpt Jesus naked, but for centuries the church covered him up with a bizarre metal veil. Now the National Gallery is revealing all.

I have seen Jesus Christ’s penis at last. Michelangelo’s statue The Risen Christ stands in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome. This masterpiece of his middle years – finished in 1521, when he was 46 – is more startling in some ways than his youthful David. After all, it is one thing to portray a young warlike hero naked, in the ancient Greek style, as the young Michelangelo did when he carved David. It is quite another thing to make a stark-naked statue of Jesus to go in a church.

Unfortunately, if you visit this statue in Rome, you won’t quite see everything. After Michelangelo’s death, it was given a bizarre baroque metal veil to cover the cock and balls he’d carved. This prudish accessory is still in place. Michelangelo’s belief in the total exposure of Christ’s humanity is still too modern for the 21st-century church.

This is my brother Mike's house in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, in a photo I took in the mid-1990s. Hearing about the snow storm they are now in the midst of, I grew nostalgic, and decided to call him.

The best thing about Mike, is that HE is in so much disagreement with our mother, Ruth Anne (Meyer) Kenan of Raleigh, that he RARELY calls Mom -- while I speak with Mom just about every three days.

And we ended up talking about all the pets we had mid-1950s - mid-1960s, including a female mutt my parents named after the SEX GODDESS Gina Lollobrigida (and we such DEVOUT ROMAN CATHOLICS), who had NINE PUPPIES on Christmas Eve.

And then, as we learned how to pull a pup off so the "runt" could get fed too, a few days later, Mom had a miscarriage in the middle of the night, and we awoke to a neighbor napping on our sofa, who explained that Dad took Mom to the hospital -- although she seemed perfectly fine, she needed to be checked out -- and soon Mom and Dad were back, Mom fine.

They told me that the fetus was so small, you could not tell its sex -- maybe an inch long -- and they BAPTIZED IT. Catholics believe ANYONE with some plain water -- or even a Coca-Cola -- can use it with the magic words and the soul goes straight to HEAVEN -- instead of LIMBO, which was not quite as good.

And while it is common for women to get DEPRESSED after a miscarriage, Mom got pregnant with my youngest sister, Julie (who was named after Dad's Grandmother who had been the Oldest Confederate Widow of North Carolina -- see halfway down here: https://theweathercontinues.blogspot.com/2021/01/nancy-sinatra-nancy-reagan-cicely-tyson.html), and that picked Mom's spirits RIGHT BACK UP!!!

What was so different back then, was that there were NO LEGAL COMPLICATIONS -- they buried the fetus in the garden, and NO DEATH CERTIFICATES or REQUIRED MORTUARY PREP or reporting for investigation into possible MURDER CHARGES as some REPUBLICAN/CHRISTIAN states later required.

Anyway, Mike and I spoke for about a half hour, and he STILL can barely speak with our NAZI/CATHOLIC/TRUMP-LOVING mother.

On this day, 50 years ago, I walked into Gregory 
Congregational Church as part of a countywide boycott 
seeking justice and equality, in the New Hanover County 
Schools. By the end of the week, white vigilantes had 
attacked the church, riots had broken out throughout the 
Black community, many people had been injured, and two 
people had been killed. The National Guard with 
tanks were patrolling the streets. I knew immediately 
that my life would be forever changed.

Carlos Slim used the papers to HIDE HIS DRUG TRAFFICKING in Wilmington, NC, primarily. But the sale was NOT announced to the Press until a month later when the check cleared.

Carlos Slim was the WEALTHIEST PERSON IN THE WORLD -- he partnered with BOTH CLINTONS in Hard-Drug Trafficking -- and when Hillary LEFT as Secretary of State, he fell to NUMBER 17!!!
