🤔 WHY BUILD A TOWER?

In this week’s Torah portion Noach, the descendants of Noah start building a tower “with its top in the heavens” to battle God. What exactly is their plan? The Netziv (Rabbi Naftali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin, 1816-1893) explains that they heard that the Great Flood was caused by people doing whatever they wanted. They concluded that corruption came from individuality and the solution was for everybody to behave exactly the same. The tower was built so that watchmen could look down on humanity and make sure nobody was marching to the beat of a different drum.

To end this arrogant effort to enforce conformity, "the Lord confused the language of the entire earth, and from there the Lord scattered them upon the face of the entire earth.” (Gen. 11:9) God didn’t create us to be identical clones; rather He made every one of us different, and we each have our own unique gift to share with the world.

When I knew Meryl Streep in 1981 and 1982, she -- and also Jamie Lee Curtis, whom I met in 2019 here in Wilmington -- are two of the MOST DOWN-TO-EARTH PEOPLE I have ever met!!! Meryl made it CLEAR TO ME that even though she was about to shoot one of the biggest successes of her career, she would rather be at HOME with her husband the famous sculptor Don Gummer and her then one or two children, than away from home shooting film!!!


But, the only time I met Don Gummer was at the 1981 Kennedy Center Honors, and he really HATED all the socializing that Meryl's career required (and she SEEMED to love). These three chapters cover the major times we partied with Meryl, the middle one has me MEETING Don:

During the shooting of Young at Heart, Frank Sinatra threw Ethel Barrymore a surprise seventy-fifth birthday party on the set.

Doris Day: “She was very touched. Sinatra proposed a toast to her and she kissed him on the cheek. I knew that it was entirely possible that this might be her last birthday, and my emotions being what they are, my eyes filled with tears… 'Hey!' somebody called out. 'Doris needs a Kleenex!' From across the set, someone threw a box of Kleenex to me. I didn't see it coming and the box struck me in the forehead. It stung a little and I gasped, more in surprise than pain.

Frank sprang at the man who had flipped the box at me and grabbed the front of his shirt, pulling the fabric up tight under his chin. 'Don't you ever do that!' he shouted at the man. 'You don't throw things at a lady, you understand?' 'It's all right, Frank,' I said. 'I'm not hurt —' 'That's beside the point! You bring the box, you creep, and you OFFER a Kleenex — you got that? You OFFER a Kleenex!'

Frank let the man go and came over to me to be sure that I was all right. Often, over the years, whenever I pulled a Kleenex out of a box, I thought of Frank."

I just watched the FIRST, above, in full -- which EVERY RESIDENT of NORTH CAROLINA should do. I SOBBED intermittently -- through all of it -- in APPRECIATION of Tom and his near relatives -- but also in ANGER at my NAZI PARENTS who told me REPEATEDLY and WITHOUT FAIL, that if I EVER tried to contact Thomas S. Kenan III -- he would HATE ME!!!

TO BE CLEAR!!! Although Tom Kenan called me nearly two weeks ago to let me know he LOVED what I wrote about his step-mother, Betty (Price) Kenan, that does NOT MEAN he agrees with everything in this Blog!!!


It is OBVIOUS to Tom that I am always HONEST -- based on the facts that I know at the time -- and clearly, I can write about things that Tom would NEVER DARE WRITE ABOUT -- because of his position in Society.

        Sean Ryan -- You seem to have missed that the John Lennon of my title and only mentioned once far down in that posting, is the Republican City Council Candidate here in Wilmington. I had PREVIOUSLY endorsed him as his stated goals were as good as Democrats', although Dems are often hypocritical. But Ben Schachtman published where everyone's campaign funds came from -- and the BIGGEST CRIMINALS send Lennon the most money. I am WELL CONNECTED to the Beatle John Lennon. “No more fracking on federal lands, period.”

“We would make sure (fracking) is eliminated and no more subsidies.”

“No more — no new fracking.”

Believe it or not, these are all quotes from then-candidate, now-President Joe Biden throughout his campaign for the highest office in the country.

And yet, as I write this, the sale date for Lease 261 is quickly approaching on November 7th. Lease 261, a 73-acre-fracking-wonderland-destination for oil and gas companies, is one of thousands of permits approved on federal or public lands by Biden since he entered the Oval Office in 2020. That's – as Biden would put it – some serious malarkey.

Projects like Lease 261 are disastrous steps towards climate and ecological disaster. That’s why I’m writing to ask you to sign the petition to support the Ban Fracking Act, which would immediately ban new permits for oil and gas projects on federal and public lands and eliminate all fracking by 2025.

NO MORE FRACKING. PERIOD.

Biden was right on the campaign trail – fracking has to stop, and soon. It’s a huge waste of groundwater, releases the 86x more potent greenhouse gas methane, and makes our communities sick. Studies from Yale and Harvard institutions of public health have found that kids living near fracking wells are two to three times more likely to develop childhood leukemia, and elderly people living in proximity to fracking projects are at a higher risk of premature death.

Meanwhile, President Biden approved 3,557 new oil and gas permits on public land during the first year of his administration. The U.S. is the world’s largest extractor of oil. That’s a pretty shameful record.

Tell President Biden to support the Ban Fracking Act today for the health of our communities, the safety of the planet, and our future.

I’m not going to lie to you and say that the fight to end fracking is an easy one – it’s not. But the Stand.earth community has been moving the needle in the U.S. and Canada, pushing back and getting oil and gas projects canceled for years. And with over a million supporters, we’re only getting stronger and more successful at passing policies that will keep us, the environment, and all the planet’s life safe and healthy.
