WOW!!! I now OFFICIALLY take back all the nasty things I said about the Mormon religion -- which produced this stellar THINKING-with-a-HEART woman!!!

I DO find a lot of their theology and tenants ridiculous and their leaders devilish -- but that hold for the Catholic Church of my youth as well, and despite myself, I now HONOR the HUGE HEART of the Catholic Church -- if not the Pope and a minority of hateful high-level clergy and their "devil minions" like Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorem.

Wilmington attorney and state Senate candidate Sherman Lee Criner will not be charged in connection with allegations that he molested a young girl earlier this year, investigators confirmed Wednesday.

Criner didn't return calls to his work and cell phones Wednesday afternoon, but a member of his legal defense team said he views the decision as total vindication for Criner.

"We just simply couldn't be happier and are glad that it's finally behind us. Our position has always been that he did not do it," attorney Buddy Allard said.

The father of the alleged victim responded in an e-mail to the Star-News on Wednesday, but declined further comment when reached by telephone Wednesday afternoon. (In newpapers published OUTSIDE Wilmington, NC, it was reported that Wilmington Police had talked the victim's father into NOT pressing charges "for the mental health" of the little girl. -- NO ONE MENTIONED THAT THIS MEANT THAT ANY REPUBLICAN COULD THEN FEEL FREE TO RAPE CHILDREN!!!)

"We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the team of dedicated professionals whose expertise has guided us through every step of this ordeal," the father wrote. "We continue to heed their advice, understanding that a trial at this time would only compound the trauma our daughter has already suffered."

The Star-News withholds the names of victims and alleged victims of sexual abuse unless they authorize their publication. Because identifying the father would identify the alleged victim, the father's name was also withheld.

The State Bureau of Investigation investigated a report made to the Wilmington Police Department on March 14 that a 6-year-old girl was molested at Thalian Hall, 310 Chestnut St., in early February. Criner was a friend of the alleged victim, according to the police incident report.

Wilmington police and the SBI have not released details of the alleged offense, which is categorized in a police report as "indecent liberties with children." Criner's attorney and the victim's father also declined to give details about the allegations Wednesday.

The decision not to file charges was made by the Special Prosecutions Section of the N.C. Attorney General's Office.

In a letter dated Tuesday from Special Deputy Attorney General G. Patrick Murphy to a Criner attorney, Murphy said the decision was made after consultation with the alleged victim's family.

"Taking into consideration all of the evidence available to us, we do not think it is in the best interest of the minor child to pursue a prosecution of Mr. Criner," Murphy wrote. "Accordingly, we are closing our file in this matter."

Criner, a Republican, will continue his run against Democratic Sen. Julia Boseman in the Nov. 7 election for New Hanover County's seat in the N.C. Senate, Allard said. (Actually, later, MORE PROOF of the molestation having come to light, Criner ENDED his campaign PREMATURELY, but was PREVIOUSLY ELECTED VICE CHAIRMAN OF THE NEW HANOVER REPUBLICAN PARTY -- AND EVEN VICE CHAIRMAN OF THE AZALEA FESTIVAL (his wife, Judge Sandra Ray Criner, being an Azalea Festival JUDGE!!!)

Criner, husband of District Court Judge Sandra Ray Criner and father of three young children, has had significant support from family and friends, as well as members of his church (FIRST BAPTIST, WILMINGTON -- WHICH HUGELY SUPPORTS MERCY HOUSE HOMELESS SHELTER AND NARCO-TRAFFICKING CENTER -- google in my blog for details!!!) and the Republican Party, Allard said.

"His decision to stay in the race is based clearly upon unwavering support by those groups of individuals," Allard said.

Boseman, a first-term senator, said: "It's been a trying time for the families involved, and I hope that everyone involved is doing OK."

She declined to comment on the Senate race.

Allard said Criner would have no immediate comment, at the request of his attorneys.

Allard praised state prosecutors for not immediately charging Criner before reviewing all of the details of the case and for not discussing the case in public, calling it "incredibly responsible prosecution."

He said it was clear that prosecutors based their decision on whether there was sufficient evidence to convict Criner, as opposed to whether there was probable cause to charge him, which would have required much less evidence.

"The probable cause standard is a very low standard," Allard said. "It doesn't take an awful lot."

Charges, even if a jury eventually acquitted Criner, would have further damaged his reputation, Allard said. (I'm not aware of the previous damage to Criner's reputation, but I guess it was enough to get him ELECTED VICE CHAIR OF NEW HANOVER WHITE CHRISTIAN REPUBLICANS!!!)

He said he didn't have an explanation for why the allegations were made. (Christian Republicans ALWAYS say this. LOL!!!)

"I don't know the minor child and I don't know her family," he said. (No excuse -- UNLESS OF COURSE THEY ARE BLACK -- which I do NOT believe these people were.)

Louise McColl, a close family friend of the Criners, said she was happy for him, his wife and their kids.

"I knew from Day One that he had done nothing wrong," she said. (Ms. McColl remembers, as well, the parting of the land from the waters as reported in the Bible.)

Criner founded the Workers' Compensation Law Firm in Wilmington. He represents injured workers, employees and insurance companies in workers' compensation claims, according to the firm's Web site.

Bald, bow-tied and often in a seersucker suit, Criner also is active in the Wilmington community. In 2004, he retired from the New Hanover County Board of Social Services after reaching the limit of two three-year terms. He served as chairman for several years.

Criner also coaches youth football and soccer and is former vice chairman of the New Hanover County Republican Party. He has served as treasurer of the N.C. Azalea Festival Board of Directors and president of the Wilmington East Rotary Club.
