1. When I saluted my old Discovery Class -- and Rev. Pete Brown as well -- at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, NC, I inadvertently neglected to mention someone whom I really miss and learned from GREATLY: FRED! (There's no smaller way to write his name adequately.)
A totally self-made man of the HIGHEST accomplishments (including his service work), Fred Cerequas is a GIANT of a physical man with a voice MORE RESONANT AND MORE STEEPED IN EARNED AUTHORITY THAN IS MINE!!!
I could say a hundred thousand things about how arresting Fred always was in his very sensitive self-analysis. I just did (for those who know Fred and read this). But the time I REALLY wanted to yell GO FRED!!! was the time he expressed his frustration with and the futility of the programs in Wilmington to benefit the homeless.
You see (although unlike me, who had FIRST HAND experience learning that MOST of Wilmington's ESTABLISHED HOMELESS AGENCIES are actually shell organizations hiding drug-money laundering -- Mercy House Homeless Shelter and First Fruit Ministries come to mind first, here -- GOOD SHEPHERD CENTER -- PROBABLY since its inception -- and that might be why its founder suffers cripling arthritis in his hands now, ALSO is (or was) involved in trafficking in the slave labor of undocumented immigrants -- INCLUDING MY FIRST WILMINGTON ROOMMATE, David Escalante, from Guatemala), Fred understood that something was FUNDAMENTALLY NOT RIGHT intuitively.
First, let me say that although David E. was here illegally (he was TRICKED into coming here and his family was BILKED of THREE+ YEARS OF SAVINGS in the process -- as documented several places in this blog), he WAS cooperating with Federal Officials in that I still possess his US Government records of immunizations that he had somehow been getting DESPITE his status.
David FLED to the Charlotte, NC area after agents associated with GOOD SHEPHERD CENTER took two of his Guatemalan friends and SHOT THEM IN THE HEAD for demanding to be paid for their work IN FRONT OF DAVID ESCALANTE -- and they then told David that would be HIS fate too if HE demanded to be paid again.

THIS TOO was documented many times in this blog AND WAS PART OF WHAT I ASKED PASTOR ERNIE THOMPSON TO INVESTIGATE ON HIS OWN before CONTINUING fnancial support of GOOD SHEPHERD as well as holding Ben David up as a PARAGON OF CHRISTIAN VIRTUE -- which is what his DEACON ascendancy is all about.
Ernie scoffed and said I might need DRUG THERAPY.
Getting back to FRED! , he did not know of these things (imagine the hell some whould pay if FRED! DID know these things . . . ). But he was FED UP with the absolute lack of appreciation by the homeless and the futile ineffectiveness of so many programs. And he was RIGHT!!!
You see, in Wilmington, if these programs are not totally corrupt, they are are mostly a bunch of DO-GOODERS trying to earn GOD-CRED -- and have next to NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ACTUAL NEEDS OF THE HOMELESS!!!
In Wilmington, while I found the black folk on FOOD STAMPS to actually use them for their intended purposes, the WHITE HOMELESS usually got all their food from the many service agencies AND SOLD THEIR FOOD STAMPS TO MERCHANTS AT 50-CENTS-ON-THE-DOLLAR, so they could buy drugs and or sex with the money.
I didn't scream too much about this when I was there -- at least Government money was helping by REDUCING burglaries, robberies, etc.

(It is important to note that many other organizations are truly charitable and helpful. Knowing I am leaving some out, I'd like to finger FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, MOTHER HUBBARD'S CUPBOARD, and ST. PAULS LUTHERAN for a little Scott-tickle of APPRECIATION!!!)

3. STILL NO WORD FROM SEWANEE (or any of the Tennessee Williams scholars), on what happened to THE VAST ACCRUAL OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS' ROYALTIES in the Soviet Union that was GREATER (according to Tennessee, Jane Smith, Vassilis Voglis, Maureen Stapleton, and "Texas" Kate), than the wealth he possessed in the Untied States -- $10,000,000.00 in early 1982, according to his accountants' statement that Tennessee showed me.
Attentive readers of this blog will recall that in those days it was NOT possible to take RUBLES out of the Soviet Union, so Kate and Tennessee often joked about going over there and filling planes with furs and bringing them back to the States. Kate and Jane (of course -- they HATED Maria St. Just-nee-Britneva) openly speculated -- to me, but NOT Tennessee that I know of -- that Maria had made some kind of DEAL WITH THE DEVIL to get control of this money -- and GOD KNOWS she had the connections and CUNNING!!!
Something HAD to happen to it.
PERHAPS SEWANEE'S HEAD LEGAL COUNSEL DONNA PIERCE OR ARCHBISHOP J. NEIL ALEXANDER OF ATLANTA (the titular head of the school), can ENLIGHTEN US ALL!!!
