Hey folks – Well, it’s been another week, another blustering attack on public media from the Trump Administration, much to the frustration of those (like me) who would prefer to report the news, not be the news. This week, in an email headlined “President Trump Finally Ends the Madness of NPR, PBS,” the administration celebrated an executive order signed Thursday night that orders the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to end all funding for NPR and PBS. Now, I won’t recapitulate everything I wrote last week, except to say two things: first, I believe this administration is less interested in ‘fair and balanced’ than it is obsequious praise, and second, while financially damaging, these orders are unlikely to “end” NPR or public media. I do want to clarify that this week’s order is different – in some key ways – than reports from last month that Trump sought to claw back funding that Congress had already approved. That $1 billion in funding over two years was affirmed by the Republican-controlled House and Senate as part of the recent stopgap budget. Trump’s plan to attack that funding is still unrealized, effectively hanging over public media like the sword of Damocles. This week’s executive order is aimed, not at defunding CPB, but more narrowly at blocking direct and indirect funding for NPR and PBS. Like many of Trump’s orders, it’s not entirely how it would be enforced, but – importantly – it does seem clear that it would not prevent CPB from funding public media affiliate stations, like WHQR. It does imply that we could not use that CPB funding to pay for NPR programming (which the order considers indirect funding). I've spoken to a few other news directors and public media folks and, as best as I can understand it, the order means the roughly $175,000 WHQR receives every year from CPB (about 8.5% of our budget) couldn’t be used to pay for programming like All Things Considered and Morning Edition, but it could be used for other parts of our budget. Checking the accounting of over 1,000 member stations seems like a daunting task, but that’s not thoroughly contemplated by the order. It almost goes without saying, but it’s not clear that Trump has the authority to order CPB – an agency established by Congress to be independent of the federal government – to do anything. CPB has pushed back on Thursday’s executive order and is already suing the Trump administration after the president tried to force three members off the board. It remains to be seen whether the courts will uphold Trump’s attempt to bypass Congress, and whether Congress itself will bend the knee to Trump’s fixation on crushing public media. We’ll keep you posted. But for now, on this front, let me say we’ve heard the support from you, and we’re deeply appreciative – now more than ever. |

THAT was very well considered as well as very well written!!! The use of the country-fried "folks", helps maintain Ben's DESPARATELY STRAIGHT image.
However, Ben continues to DENY that Mayor Saffo -- and MOST of Wilmington's Politicians and Law Enforcement Leadership -- are HUGE in DRUG TRAFFICKING -- just like their Christian Churches!!!
It is SO EASY for me or anyone else to prove this -- in fact it was BEN SCHACHTMAN who told me that EVERY ONE of my emails with the PROOFS OF CRIMES that I sent all of City Council and New Hanover County Commissioners beginning in 2011, are PRESERVED PERMANENTLY and ALL CITIZENS have LEGAL ACCESS TO THEM!!!
THIS is why I intend to let ALL DEM and REPUB POLITICIANS who control PUBLIC RADIO FUNDING and LICENSING know this (sadly, I won't have time to do that tonight).
