Kenan Memorial Fountain, the centerpiece of Fifth Avenue at Market Street, was created from Indiana limestone and designed by Carrere and Hastings of New York, the same architectural firm responsible for the New York Public Library and other designs commissioned by the William Rand Kenan family.
In 1921, William Rand Kenan, Jr. gave the fountain and accompanying walls and benches to the city in memory of his parents, William Rand Kenan and Mary Hargrave Kenan. According to Walter E. Campbell, author of Across Fortune’s Tracks:A Biography of William Rand Kenan, the fountain “represents the close connection between one man’s economic interests, in the Carolina Apartments, and his love for the city at the center of his family’s history.”
This is a PILE OF CRAP, in that William Rand Kenan, Jr., came to HATE the small-mindedness of Wilmingtonians so much he only devoted a few sentences to the city in his autobiography. He PREFERRED to live in his penthouse apartments in Manhattan -- at the most PRIME address in New York!!!
>>> NEVERTHELESS, I NOW LIVE JUST ABOVE IT!!!
1. My address begins with the number "420" -- LOL!!!
2. I have the QUIRKIEST small apartment in which my bed will be in the KITCHEN, and my sitting-room/office has an air conditioner so LOUD (but I think effective enough for the whole apartment), it will take some SERIOUS getting used to -- but I ALWAYS adjust, and I DON'T air condition all year.
3. I had responded to a "House for Rent" ad a few days ago, but too late got a reply from the owner, a relative of Mayor Bill Saffo, who given what I disclosed to him, was very interested in my leasing his property. He recently had a MAJOR business triumph, requiring him to move to Africa.
So I replied that it was too late for that -- and detailed what I plan to do with the Mayor, whom he holds in HIGHEST REGARD!!!
4. I finally heard from Testosteroni, and it appears that we simply had a major "Personality Conflict", which has not otherwise affected our relationship.
I have done what I know he would prefer to recent blog postings -- although he did NOT ask me to.
5. I'll be READY for THIS 4th of July!!!
6. And I must get back to my getting settled.
Scott
