Religious PTSD: What can you do if you are afraid of Hell?

The topic of Religious Trauma is vast and includes things such as emotional manipulation, sexual abuse, and much more. Within this posting I’m covering one specific topic, a deeply rooted fear of Hell that is so potent it disrupts your life.
What can you do to cope?
First, let’s cover the basics.
So what exactly is Hell?
Now this is where it all gets interesting. You would think that there would be full clarity and agreement on the concept, but no, instead we find that there exists a very wide diversity of distinctly different conflicting beliefs on the topic.
Permit me to give you a very brief high-level tour.
Eastern orthodox
It is often viewed, not a place, but instead an absence of God, and hence not being in the presence of God is Hell. This is not universal, some Orthodox Icons do depict hell as a place of punishment, but that may simply be artistic license.
Catholic
Perhaps the most popular variation. It is declared to be a real place of eternal fiery punishment for those that refuse to love God. However, in addition to the heaven and Hell concepts, there is also a middle place they call purgatory where you can still potentially avoid hell. Historically Hell was often believed to be physically under the ground within the earth.
Evangelical views
It is generally seen as a place of unending conscious torment, both physical and spiritual, but for some that would simply be due to it being an “eternal separation” from God.
There are some who do not hold the belief that hell is forever and instead assert that you will be extinguished or annihilated after a period of “limited conscious punishment”. The groups that adhere to that belief include the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Christadelphians.
In summary, there is no agreement or consensus at all.

In a recent interview on “20/20” with Diane Sawyer, 33-year-old Jennifer Turpin and 21-year-old Jordan Turpin said their parents, David and Louise, used belts, sticks, dog kennels and homemade cages as tools for punishment, in addition to chaining them to their beds and pulling on their hair when they misbehaved.
“They literally used the Bible to explain their behavior to us,” Jennifer said in the interview. “They loved to point out things in Deuteronomy, saying that, ‘We have the right to do this to you.’ … That they even had the right to kill us if we didn’t listen.”
The shocking abuse in the Turpin home went unnoticed in the community of Perris, about 60 miles southeast of Los Angeles, until then-17-year-old Jordan Turpin escaped from the house and called police.
During the “20/20” interview, Jordan recalled how she could barely press the buttons for 911 after escaping the house. She had never spoken to anybody before on the phone, she said, and was shaking.
“I had to make sure that if I left we wouldn’t go back, and we would get the help we needed,” she said in a tearful interview. “Because if we went back, there’s no way I would be sitting here right now.”
And to say a couple of more things about my phone conversation with Gerry and Joel, last night, MOST OF IT was SUPER VULGAR -- since they are DEVOUT ROMAN CATHOLICS -- so I MATCHED THEM!!!

Nikole Hannah-Jones understands power.
How it is nurtured, how it protects itself and most importantly, how not to give it away. Unfortunately, lessons about power are rarely pleasurable.
There is a cost. It can hurt. Burn. Sometimes scar. One reason Hannah-Jones understands power so well is because she has had her fair share of public run-ins with it from the moment “The 1619 Project” series was published in the New York Times Magazine. But through it all — targeted by the White House, second-guessed by historians, denied tenure at her alma mater — what has become clear is her detractors did not consider this: Hannah-Jones has power of her own.
“Who would think that a single work of journalism would become a Republican talking point, would be in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, would be named in legislation across the country?” Hannah-Jones said. “All of that has been very weird. But of course — and I think a lot of things led to the moment that we’re in — 1619 certainly played a role.”
