William Rand Kenan, Jr., Mary Lily's brother who on his own had become Flagler's right-hand-man -- and ran everything from New York and Florida, took over managing Mary Lily and his other siblings' fortunes, so ruled Standard Oil with the authority of the one who controls the most stock.
Death and legacy[edit]
Kenan died in 1965. In 1986, the Kenan Center was founded at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.[5] It houses the Kenan Institute for the Study of Private Enterprise as well as the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust and William R. Kenan Jr. Fund.[1] Moreover, he provided the funds for Kenan Memorial Stadium and it was named, at his request, in honor of his parents.
Because of the sensitivity of racial issues at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the 2010's (see Silent Sam) and Kenan's father William Rand Kenan Sr.'s leadership role in the Wilmington Insurrection of 1898, the stadium has been rededicated to William Kenan Jr. ("William Sr. was the commander of a white supremacist paramilitary force, which massacred scores of black residents in Wilmington, on a single day in 1898.")[6]
The Kenan–Flagler Business School at UNC is named for him (Jr.), and his sister, Mary Kenan Flagler. The Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University was founded in 1995.[7]
Eighty-five endowed professorships at colleges and universities in the United States are named for him.[8]
Another Kenan Center is located in Lockport, New York. The Lockport area also benefited significantly from Kenan's philanthropy.[2]

And more recently, the Kenan Family with the Episcopal Church put Donald Trump into the Presidency.
